Wooden work of Saharanpur Material-Mango Wood size-Bowl 4inch and plater 10inch
Wooden craft work of Saharanpur is said to be started about 400 years back during Mughal era, when some craftsmanship came from Kashmir to settle in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and took the work of wooden carving to earn their living. Gradually this art gained its popularity and got extended amongst common man in Saharanpur. Trees provide the raw material for craftsmen, as they lend themselves to fine decorative carving and inlay work. The craft is also influenced by Kashmiri designs, with many of the craftpersons having descended from Kashmiri immigrants. These influences continue to reflect in contemporary products like the jaali work and the anguri or vine leaf pattern.
